The Rudraksha

The Seed of Rudra

A natural seed, read for its formation. An editorial guide to what Rudraksha is, how mukhi is understood, and how Maison Rudra evaluates each bead.

What is Rudraksha?

Rudraksha is the seed of the Elaeocarpus tree, which grows across the Himalayan belt and parts of Southeast Asia. The seeds native to the eastern valleys of Nepal are traditionally the most sought after — smaller, denser, and more sharply defined in their natural surface.

Each seed carries natural clefts running from crown to base. These clefts are called mukhi — faces. A bead's mukhi count is its most immediately visible characteristic, and the beginning, not the end, of how it is read.
